Bijuteria em arame (propriedades dos metais I) Wire jewelry (properties of metals I)

Today's post can be useful not only for those who only use jewelry, because they get to know a little more about its characteristics, but also, and perhaps especially, for those who make jewelry. Because, each metal has a different behavior, in relation to its modeling. So, I talk about my experience of creating jewelry with some metals. I already talked about metals used in jewelry in the post "Metal properties" and wrote specifically about copper in the post "Copper jewelry".

#1 The beauty of wire jewelry

As I've been talking about in previous publications, one of the techniques I like to use to create jewelry is the modeling of some wires for this purpose. This is a manual, artistic work that results in unique items. Even if the design is repeated, it is normal for the jewelry to have some differences. As I said in the post "One-of-a-kind jewelry", I like to accentuate these differences, even between earrings of the same pair, to enhance the rustic, organic, lively, natural, raw energy of the pieces. One aspect that I noticed is that it is not only difficult to create the same pieces, there is also difficulty in creating the different pieces.

#2 The behavior of the various metals according to my experience

Stainless steel wire is extremely difficult to shape. Brass wire also causes difficulty, although not as much as stainless steel. However, after the correct shape of these wires is given and fixed, the jewelry retains its design.

In my opinion, copper is the metal with the best relationship between malleability and the ability to hold its shape without bending or giving in easily to pressure. Aluminum, on the other hand, is extremely malleable, it is easy to work with aluminum, but if you apply pressure on it, you can easily change its shape.

If the wire strands are thicker, the modeling difficulty is greater compared to thinner strands. It is important to use the right thickness of wire for the item you want. But, for example, in a thicker wire, such as 2mm, aluminum, among the metals I worked with, is the only one that is easily shaped.

Regarding the oxidation of metals, with the exception of stainless steel, all of them oxidize (brass, copper, aluminum, silver, gold). However, this chemical process provides protection and durability to the piece. Some people don't like to see the color change resulting from oxidation. And, there are some ways to clean the jewelry in order to regain its original color. If the jewelry doesn't have beads, cleaning will be easier. If the jewelry has beads, some cleaning processes have to aim to protect the beads in the first place so they don't change. But, there are those who like to see the pieces with a more aged, duller tone, which is also to be valued, as it is related to the natural behavior of metal and the accentuated shines do not always match chic looks. So copper goes from a shade of rose gold to a shade of dark golden brown, brass goes from a shade of bright gold to a shade of darker and duller gold (gold also becomes darker and duller over time), aluminum changes from a bright gray tone to a duller gray tone, silver turns from a bright tone to a darker and duller tone, as well.

#3 The metals I prefer to work with

In terms of wire forming, I don't intend to work with stainless steel and I don't like aluminum very much, because the first is extremely difficult to model and the second is too malleable for the pieces I create.

Copper is a good material for modeling and is one of my favorite metals. However, I confess that I like the golden tone of the brass better. Brass is harder to model, but I love the effect. And, it looks great on the last imperfectly shaped hoop earrings I've been creating, as is the case with the earrings in the photo.

Maybe, one day, I'll create pieces with yellow gold wire, as I really like this tone. But I don't know if I'll really enjoy the experience, since gold is also very malleable and it can be difficult to give the piece strength with simpler crafting techniques.

  4. Great post about different wires (metals) used for making jewellery. I used to make jewellery from wires when I was younger. Now, I mostly make jewellery (necklaces) with and from textiles. Now I use sewing to make my accessories.

    1. Sometimes we change the techniques. :) My experience with the creation of wire jewelry is being increasingly directed towards my preferences. Some techniques and works I do not intend to repeat. I saw one of your necklaces made from an old dress and I loved it! Thanks for the comment! Have a great week!
